What we did – 29 November 2017

The 50+ drop-in has expanded into the ICT Room at Whitmore Community Centre. The desktop computers are new — installed yesterday — and an Internet service upgrade will follow soon. So the project is using two spaces at WCC. Both were full today.

Special thanks to volunteers Alice from Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy, Jacqueline from Financial Conduct Authority and James from Mace Group, all via Benefacto – and our regular volunteers Derek, Michael and Tom.

Volunteer Day

Well, I experienced my first volunteering day at the Hackney 50+ Drop-in clinic … what a fab day!

Fully enjoyed the interactions with all the members.  I particularly enjoyed my time with Carol as I guided her on her journey of discovery to accessing emails and sending a surprise one to her daughter.  To viewing wonderful websites for historic venues Wilton Music Hall, Geoffry Museum.

A truly rewarding day.

My Day at the IT Drop in Centre

Today i visited the IT drop in centre to help users with some IT skills to use a laptop and find their way around the internet.

I could tell this was very valuable to the users and it was nice to be able to help people.

In this day and age most things are on the internet with online shopping etc, so its good to see everyone having a go.

What we did – 22 November 2017

We thought the session would be quieter than usual because a clashing event had drawn away some of our regulars. But we were almost overwhelmed by the number of people who did turn up. We can’t claim it was the highest attendance yet because we lost count after 30. Next week we will expand into the community centre’s newly refurbished IT Room — with new desktops for 8 people and space for up to 4 other users and volunteers.

Special thanks to volunteers Ajay & Bradley (from Carey Group) and Olly from Mace Group, via Benefacto – and our regular volunteers Derek and Michael.

My Time As A Helper

I volunteered at the Hackney 50+ IT Drop-In today. It was good to see how popular it is, with the room full of people using computers and socialising. I helped a lady named Catherine to write posts on the blog and to check and answer her emails. She was very grateful for my assistance and I was delighted to have helped her today.

Rick and Sallie have clearly done a great job of putting it all together and I would recommend it as a very rewarding and welcoming place for both attendees and volunteers who would like to help out.

What we did – 15 November 2017

27 guests + 5 volunteers + 1 session worker + 1 staff = almost as busy as last week.

Special thanks to volunteers Jasmine, Lionel and William from Man Group, via Benefacto – and our regular volunteers Derek and Michael.
