Expecting half-term lull today, but the session was full anyway.

Older people using digital inclusion to challenge isolation and loneliness in our community
Over a million older people in the UK are always or often lonely, some go for months without seeing friends or family. Visiting an older person as part of your weekly run can make a huge difference to their life.
We call the older people we visit coaches because they help motivate us to run and they share their wisdom. It’s amazing what you can learn from your coach. Coach runs can be fit around your schedule and don’t need to take up more than 20 minutes of your time per week.
Margaret Gilbert had always lived with her only child, Richard. He used to be her carer until he was diagnosed with terminal cancer five years ago – then those roles were reversed.
Today’s hero is Wadley — learning IT and sharing what he already knows a lot about. Wadley is a genius in the kitchen — fed everybody with his own Saltfish-&-Ackee recipe (plus yellow yam, plantain, and dasheen).
Also special thanks to volunteers Cathy and Gemma from Bernstein Alliance, via Benefacto – and our regular volunteers Charlie, Derek and Michael.
Use our tracker to check whether your local services are meeting strict waiting-time targets for cancer, routine operations and A&E.
The NHS is under unprecedented pressure. Rising numbers of patients need hospital care – whether in an accident and emergency department, for cancer treatment or for planned operations and care, such as knee and hip replacements.
For each there are strict targets local services are expected to meet across the UK. But what are the chances of being seen in time where you live? Use the interactive tracker to find out.
Do you remember this photography project with Helen Cammock at Open School East?
Helen has a new project called Shouting in Whispers – she will tell you about it herself at Whitmore Community Centre, Friday afternoon – 2 pm – 20 October 2017.
Helen will also pop in on Wednesday morning 18 October. Be sure not to miss her!
Finally got the kitchen-and-food program started. So the kitchen space was almost as busy as the IT space – where more than 20 people got help and support with their own devices (phone, tablets, laptops) and ours.
Special thanks to volunteers Danutha and Katie from LexisNexis, via Benefacto – and our regular volunteers Charlie, Derek and Michael.
We found a deadly yam lurking in the kitchen. You’ll never guess what happened next!
A staff training film produced by Patricia Sim for the Whitmore Institute of Gerontology.
We bring (mainly) older people together for enjoyable shared learning experiences. Our aim is to allow everyone who wants to learn something or share activities in friendly settings a chance to do so at minimal cost.
