Disease of the body’s blood flow affect the outcome of the transplant and might make the transplant too dangrous or too difficult. For example, if you have an illness that affects your blood vessels, it may not be technically possible to connect the blood vessels of the kidney to the blood vessels in your body. Heart disease in particular is another concern as this is the most common cause of death in the early post transplant period. You are at particular risk if you are elderly, smoke or have smoked or have diabetes. Most units will check for heart disease if they think this may be.
